Alabama 811 is committed to helping students and families understand the importance of safe digging practices around underground utilities, including water, sewer, natural gas, electricity, and communication lines. The Alabama 811 Kids Safe Digging program is an engaging educational initiative to increase awareness and encourage students to learn about energy sources, and how to stay safe at home, school, and outdoors.
811 is a special phone number you can call before digging. When someone contacts 811, people will come to mark where all the underground pipes and wires are, so everyone knows where it’s safe to dig. This helps keep everyone safe and makes sure that we don’t break anything that helps bring electricity, water, or internet to our homes.
Did you know there are lots of important things hidden underground, like power lines, gas pipes, and water pipes?
When people need to dig, it’s important to make sure they don’t hit these things by accident. This includes projects like planting a tree, installing a mailbox, or installing a fence, That’s where 811 comes in!
So, whenever someone is planning to dig, they should always contact 811 first!
To keep everything safe when people dig, special colors are used to show where utilities are buried. The underground lines will be marked with paint on the ground. In some cases, there will be colored flags or both. If there are flags present, don’t remove them!
Each color means something different!
