Alabama 811 provides the communication between the member utility companies and anyone with intent to excavate using voice or web. The service is free to the excavator, giving the incentive to notify Alabama 811 of their digging intent. Once information is taken and mapped using the AL811 call center application, a locate request notification is sent out to the affected AL811 members. Upon receiving the notification request, the members with assets in the area will be notified to locate and mark their underground facilities in the area of the excavation site.
Update information such as your operating hours, main contact person, billing address, emergency contact, and more!
If you are left off locate requests in areas where you have underground facilities, you need to update your notification area.
Positive Response is a process to facilitate communication between utilities, excavators and Alabama 811, regarding the status of identifying and marking the underground facilities within the proposed area of excavation on locate request tickets.
Alabama’s enforcement program is a complaint-driven process where a complaint may be submitted against an entity for violation of the Alabama Underground Damage Prevention State Law. A complaint may be submitted as information only and not designated for enforcement penalties.
*** Note: This is an annual data collection report for damages and near misses. This does not replace notifying the underground facility owner of a damage to a facility during excavation practices. Those should be reported to the facility owner directly and by contacting Alabama 811 through the normal locate request process. ***

The online excavator training tool is a FREE, self-paced tool that should take around 45 minutes to complete and provides an overview of the law, requirements, and how to dig safely. The course will provide a certificate upon completion.
