Alabama 811 offers training for excavators, crews, municipalities, and organizations to ensure safe and compliant digging practices.

ONLINE TRAINING OPTIONS:

Excavator Safety Training Course

The online excavator training tool is a FREE, self-paced tool that should take around 45 minutes to complete and provides an overview of the law, requirements, and how to dig safely.

The course will provide a certificate upon completion.

In-Person Meetings:

Damage Prevention Meetings

Quarterly Area Damage Prevention Meetings are one-hour, in-person sessions held in key regions across Alabama to support safer excavation practices and reduce utility damage. Led by Alabama 811’s damage prevention staff, these meetings provide timely insights, practical guidance, and an opportunity for collaboration among professionals who work around underground utilities.

Meetings are currently held in nine of the highest-volume areas across the state, with additional areas added as needed.

Each meeting is designed to be focused, efficient, and practical. Attendees can expect:

– Updates and insights from Alabama 811’s damage prevention team
– Discussion of local damage trends and common issues
– Open conversation and collaboration with other industry professionals
– Networking opportunities with utilities, excavators, locators, and public agencies

Meetings typically last one hour, making it easy to participate without a large time commitment.

These meetings are open to anyone involved with underground utilities, including:

– Utilities
– Excavators and contractors
– Locators
– Surveyors
– Public officials
– Engineers and inspectors
– Other industry stakeholders

Beginning in 2026, the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) has approved one continuing education (CE) hour per meeting, adding additional value for attendees who need CE credit.
