Alabama 811 works closely with utilities in the state of Alabama to prevent damage to underground facilities in two primary ways.

Utilities routinely contact Alabama 811, as excavators, to notify other utilities in their area of pending excavation activity. Once a utility locate request has been placed, Alabama 811 will email a copy of the request to the person who initiated the locate request and also to the person designated as an on site contact. These emails are for the records of the utility acting as an excavator and do not constitute membership with Alabama 811 for that utility.

Utilities that have completed the Alabama 811 General Membership process will receive notice of all pending excavation activity within a notification area defined, by that utility, during the membership setup process. Alabama 811 is a non-profit organization funded and directed by its member utilities.
